my dog has diabetes can i test him with a one touch blood meter machine that i have at home?

In spite of what "Cap" said, no you cannot. You will need a special glucometer for dogs than humans. Dogs have different values in their blood than humans. Would you do a blood transfusion on a human with dog blood? Not unless you want to die. Human and dog blood is completely different, and machines that work on human blood will not get an accurate reading with dog blood.

Wouldn’t you talk about this with your vet???????????

There are handheld Glucometers available for pets, but they have different settings than those for humans. If you’re interested in getting one, contact your veterinarian. He/she may be able to order one for you, and train you how to properly draw a blood sample to evaluate his blood glucose at home.

Kudos to you for taking action in your dog’s health!

Yes, you can. Your vet will still need to do his or her own glucose monitoring in order to adjust insulin levels; however, if for some reason you are concerned (e.g., think he may have overdosed and have low blood sugar, or think the insulin dose isn’t working and he may need to go in to the vets to have it adjusted) — you can test it at home.

This is commonly done with pet ferrets, which get a disease called insulinoma. Most people lance a paw pad and test as you would for a human. Sometimes the meter will read differently on animals, such as consistently 10 mg/dl lower or higher than the actual reading, but if you test a few times to establish what a "normal" reading is, then you can still tell when it’s not normal.

You can find more info on this by doing a search for home glucose testing in ferrets. Also, I should point out that you don’t want to use a glucometer or lancet back and forth on dogs and humans, because there are bloodborne diseases that both can get.

If your dog has been diagnosed w/ diabetes, then you should discuss this with your vet.
