There sugar levels would be wrong to dangerous they could collapse or go into a coma, their circulation, heart, kidney’s and liver could be damaged. The dietitian told me eating normal everyday healthy food will be ok. I am type 2 diet controlled and my diet is toast & tea for breakfast, ham sandwich & coffee at lunch and then, potatoes with either chicken, stew, mince, fish fingers, bacon, and veg and more coffee all with 1 teaspoonful of sugar and maybe once a week a bar of chocolate and fried breakfast at weekend, my recent blood tests for liver, kidney’s, sugar etc were perfect, dietitian told me stick to the things you are eating and it will stay great, I also take thyroxin for under active thyroid. and slightly over weight, female age 52

they can go into diabetic shock because they are not regulating their insulin and glucose levels

It depends. If they are controlling their glucose in another way, like by exercise or insulin then they can eat whatever they want and be fine. It is about balance.

There isn’t a "diabetic diet". Diabetics eat normal food. However, it’s recommended that Type 2’s keep their carbs to no more than 30-35g/meal (ask your doc), and Type 1’s need to watch their carbs but are not per se restricted as long as we take the corresponding amount of insulin. Prolonged high blood glucose eventually causes blindness, heart disease, kidney malfunction, and a host of other complications. You can’t live like a monk, so we just do the best we can to keep it under control. Checking your BG’s several times a day and correcting if necessary is helpful.
