Most people don’t know that diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in the United States. If you are diabetic you are 2-4 times more likely to die of heart disease, compared to someone who is not a diabetic.
Diabetes is caused due the absence of insulin production or the inability of the cells to absorb and use the insulin that is produced. This condition is known as “insulin resistance”.

Diabetes was thought to be mainly hereditary, but if that was true the number of diabetics all over the world would remain steady throughout the decades. Unfortunately, in the last few years there is an alarming increase in the number of patients. Higher body weight, bad eating habits and the absence of exercise are the main causes for this phenomenon.

Here are a few tips you need to follow, if you want to cure diabetes:

* I’m sure you know that being overweight is a major risk factor for developing diabetes and having regular exercise can help you remain at a healthy weight.
* The majority of the grains you eat should be whole grains.
* Avoid food and beverages that contain added sugars.
* Stay away from Trans fatty acids and prefer non-fat dairy products.
* Avoid alcohol, because it’s toxic to the nerves.
* Don’t eat too many carbs at once. Try to spread your carbohydrate intake throughout the day.
* Take a daily supplement that contains zinc, calcium, iron and vitamins A, C and D.
* Drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration.
* Manage stress: having too much stress can increase blood sugar. Yoga and meditation can help you relax.
* Reduce your cholesterol levels: if the “good” cholesterol levels are below 35 mg/dl the risk is greatly increased.
* The same thing applies to having a triglyceride level over 250 mg/dl.
* Always read food labels: this can help you determine the amount of sugar that is contained in every food.
* Try to count the total grams of carbohydrates you eat every day.
* Take a magnesium supplement. According to many studies magnesium can be used as a form of therapy, in order to reduce insulin secretion abnormalities and blood sugar levels.
* To keep your blood sugar steady, you need to eat 3 small meals and 3 snacks every day and avoid overeating.
* Limit you sodium intake to less than 2,300mg daily.
* You need to exercise for at least 3-4 hours per week.

Dog: What is the best food for a senior dog just diagnoised w/ diabetes?

Posted under 8) Diabetes Dog by admin

my dog was on eukanuba since a puppy, after the dog food scare several years ago I put her on senior foster and smith chicken and brown rice, about a year ago my vet wanted her on science diet for seniors. They are now suggesting Hills w/d. What is the best food for her, the only processed treats she gets is senior or lite greenies to help with her teeth.

Eukanuba and Hills Science Diet are both very bad quality foods. Yes, your vet recommended it, but that does not mean it’s healthy. Many vets, including mine, sell Science Diet. Vet clinics are paid to promote and sell the food.

Make sure you talk to your vet before switching foods. You want to make sure that the food you choose will be okay for your dog’s diabetes.

Look into these foods:

What should I expect my new diet to be while I have gestational diabetes?

Posted under 7) Gestational Diabetes Diet by admin

I go to see the gestational diabetes nutritionist on thurs. I am 29 weeks and they diagnosed me at 28 weeks pregnant. She told me not to worry about what I’m eating until then, so I’m using these last few days to get my cravings satisfied! lol. When I see her though, what should I expect to be eating alot of? Staying away from? Is it going to be that bad? Or was it manageable for you?

• Eat a variety of foods, distributing calories and carbohydrates evenly throughout the day. Make sure both your meals and your snacks are balanced. The American Diabetes Association recommends that you eat three small-to-moderate-sized meals and two to four snacks every day, including an after-dinner snack. Although your meal plan may contain fewer carbs than you normally eat, complex carbohydrates should continue to provide most of your calories.

• Don’t skip meals. Be consistent about when you eat them and the amount of food you eat at each one. Your blood sugar will remain more stable if your food is distributed evenly throughout the day and consistently from day to day.

• Eat a good breakfast. Your blood glucose levels are most likely to be out of whack in the morning. To keep your level in a healthy range, you may have to limit carbohydrates (breads, cereal, fruit, and milk), boost your protein intake, and possibly avoid fruit and juice altogether.

• Include high-fiber foods, such as fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grain breads and cereals, and dried peas, beans, and legumes. These foods are broken down and absorbed more slowly than simple carbohydrates, which may help keep your blood sugar levels from going too high after meals.

• Limit your intake of foods and beverages that contain simple sugars such as soda, fruit juice, flavored teas, and most desserts — or avoid them altogether. These foods can quickly elevate your blood sugar. Ask your healthcare practitioner about using foods sweetened with an artificial sweetener if you need a sweet fix.

• Milk is high in lactose, a simple sugar, so if you drink more than two or three glasses a day, you may need to limit the amount you drink and find an alternative source of calcium. If you’re looking for a new beverage of choice, try club soda with a squeeze of lemon or orange, or unsweetened decaffeinated iced tea.

Moderately increasing your activity level is also a good way to help keep your blood glucose levels at normal levels. Again, speak with your diabetes educator or practitioner about the right amount and intensity of exercise for you.

Can Gestational Diabetes affect only one eye with blurred vision?

Posted under 6) Gestational Diabetes Symptoms by admin

I just had my 1 hour GD testing done last week & it came back as 171 when it should be 140. I have to go back and do a 3 hr glucose test to confirm GD. Now I’m starting to put together why I’m always thirsty and why my son is measuring pretty big. My question is can you have blurred vision in only ONE eye as a symptom of GD? Also, if you have failed your 1 hr GD test…what was your numbers? and did you fail the 3 hour one?

Yes, blurred vision can be a symptom of GD and it doesn’t matter if it’s one eye or both. However, sometimes vision changes in pregnancy even for people without GD, so just make sure you tell your doctor about it.

Many people fail the first but pass the second test. They will be looking to see if your high sugar can fall down below a certain benchmark by the 2nd and 3rd hour. Honestly, a 171 isn’t too promising, that is quite high. So even if you do pass the 2nd test you should adjust your eating to help with that sugar spike.

Dog diabetes, Liver and kidney weakness?

Posted under 8) Diabetes Dog by admin

I have a Doberman Pincher, said to have diabetes and weak liver and kidney. We were told that he had only 2 months more to live. I wish to use herbal remedies to improve his health, even if its only 2 months, i want him to feel better. I have got a herb at home which known for its cure on diabetes (in human), i wonder is it advisable to do so? I really dont want to cause him any more harm, just wanted him to feel healthier and better.

How old is your Dobie? The first thing I would do is get a second opinion from a different vet. Since you are interested in holistic therapy, see if you can find a holistic veterinarian in your area. I live in the greater Cincinnati area and know of one vet, and others who practice alternative therapy along with the usual medicine.

Are you giving insulin injections? Or are you preferring to avoid all traditional courses of therapy?

One supplement that we sometimes use at our clinic is milk thistle, which has protective effects on the liver–you would have to check with a doctor for dosage. You may also want to check in to different diets–there are good prescription diets available, but if you don’t want those, check into different over-the-counter foods. If his kidneys are truly failing, low protein diets are recommended.

Many herbs are used in both humans and animals (the milk thistle, for example), however, some can be detrimental when used in different species. Again, I would highly advise checking for a holistic veterinarian in your area who will support your desires.
